89 bird species found at Nongsaya Lake in Arunachal Pradesh

A comprehensive survey conducted at Nongsaya Lake in Arunachal Pradesh's Namsai district identified a total of 89 bird species over two days, as reported by officials on Thursday.

The study, led by the Arunachal Pradesh Birding Club (APBC) in partnership with the Public Works Department, reflects the lake's significant ecological role, stated conservationist Koj Mama. Nongsaya Lake is situated approximately 9 kilometers from Namsai town.

Among the notable bird species observed were the oriental darter, lesser adjutant, pale-chinned blue flycatcher, blossom-headed parakeet, yellow-bellied warbler, and chestnut-capped babbler.

Mama emphasized the lake's surroundings as a fertile ground for biodiversity, conducive for bird and butterfly conservation. Beyond functioning as a natural habitat, the area has the potential to become an ideal site for environmental education and recreational activities.

The conservationist highlighted the potential of the lake to contribute to sustainable development and greater community involvement in ecosystem preservation. The team also documented various butterfly species, including the rare Assam Pasa, underscoring the area's ecological diversity.

Nongsaya Lake, with its lush green forest and potential as a sanctuary for migratory waterbirds, holds promise as a future global bird-watching hotspot.

Mama advocated for developing infrastructure that supports responsible ecotourism, such as thoughtfully designed trekking routes that minimize wildlife disruption. He pointed out the critical role of the lake's ecosystem in preserving major watersheds and sustaining biodiversity.

He further suggested that a strategic approach to the lake's development could fulfill multiple functions, including conservation, sustainable fishing, recreation, and serving as a haven for migratory birds.

Migratory birds are particularly crucial for maintaining ecological balance, acting as indicators of environmental health, and aiding in long-term conservation strategies.

Mama envisions the transformation of Nongsaya Lake into a vibrant biodiversity hub, which could enhance both environmental and economic sustainability for the Namsai district.
