Schools Shut in Mizoram Amid Heavy Rains and Landslides

Aizawl, Jun 3 (PTI) All schools across 10 districts in Mizoram remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, as heavy rainfall continued to wreak havoc through landslides, mud-flows, and rock falls in several areas, according to officials.

Except for Saitual, district administrations declared the closure of schools as a safety measure amidst the ongoing downpour.

A notification from Aizawl's Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman, Lalhriatpuia, advised schools within the Aizawl district to halt student attendance on June 3 to ensure their safety.

The state capital, Aizawl, experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday morning.

Schools throughout the state had previously been closed due to rain from May 29 to May 30 and again on June 2.

In Saitual, Deputy Commissioner Lalngura Tlau allowed schools to reopen Tuesday, noting improved weather conditions.

He stated that the effects of the monsoon were minimal in the district, posing no major threats.

Heavy rains in Mizoram have led to landslides, floods, and other crises, resulting in five fatalities, including three Myanmarese refugees.

Mizoram has been under incessant rain since May 24, with severe downpours starting May 30, inflicting widespread damage.

Roads, both intra-state and inter-locality, have been blocked at 190 locations due to landslides.

Over 200 families have been evacuated because of floods and fissures caused by the rain.

More than 190 homes have collapsed or suffered damage during this monsoon, as reported by the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department.

According to IMD's report, Aizawl district registered 253.7 mm of rainfall over the past three days, followed by Khawzawl with 248.33 mm and Siaha with 241.5 mm during the same period.

The report predicts light to moderate rainfall over the next five days.
