Mizoram Faces Calamity: Five Dead and Hundreds Displaced Due to Landslides

Mizoram, June 3 (PTI): In the wake of relentless heavy rains over the past ten days, Mizoram is grappling with severe landslides, house collapses, and flash floods that have claimed five lives. According to the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department, three individuals perished in Champhai district, while Aizawl and Serchhip districts reported one casualty each. These tragedies have been attributed to the collapse of houses and walls triggered by landslides and flash floods.

Data from the department reveals that the state has experienced 552 landslides and significant structural damage, with 152 houses either collapsing or suffering destruction during this period. A total of 198 families have been forced to flee their homes due to landslides or fissures, while 92 more have evacuated because of flooding.

Champhai district, located in east Mizoram and bordering Myanmar, has borne the brunt of the current monsoon fury, recording three fatalities, 209 landslides, nine damaged houses, and the evacuation of 14 families. In Serchhip district, one fatality was reported alongside 75 landslides, 27 damaged houses, and the displacement of 132 families.

Aizawl district saw 18 landslides, 13 damaged or collapsed houses, and 17 abandoned homes. Meanwhile, Khawzawl recorded 75 landslides, Lunglei reported 60, and Siaha, in southern Mizoram, experienced 53 landslides. Siaha district also saw 29 homes collapsed or damaged, with Kolasib reporting 23, Lunglei 18, and Khawzawl nine.

As a precautionary measure, all schools in the state—except those in Saitual district—remained closed on Tuesday due to the persistently inclement weather. Situational disruptions have also extended to the transportation sector, with more than a hundred trucks carrying essential commodities stranded in Serchhip.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report highlights that Aizawl district received 253.7 mm of rainfall over the past three days, followed by Khawzawl with 248.33 mm, and Siaha with 241.5 mm within the same duration.

Weather forecasts suggest light to moderate rainfall is expected over the coming five days, indicating ongoing challenges for the affected regions.
