'Marriage scam' in UP, man poses as groom for ₹2-3k, women garland themselves | Watch

Videos are surfacing on the internet with a claim that an alleged mass marriage scam took place in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia. This reportedly happened at the Mukhyamantri Samohik Vivah Yojna event that took place on January 25.

In the videos, it can be seen that the women were garlanding themselves. In another video, Bablu, a resident of Ballia, said that he went to the event as a spectator at the community programme. He was made to pose as a groom in exchange for ₹2,000 to ₹3,000.

The man alleged in a video that the programme co-ordinators made several men pose as grooms. Ballia District Magistrate, Ravindra Kumar said that the allocated funds for beneficiaries have not been disbursed as intended. An investigation has been launched and an FIR has been registered against nine individuals, including the Assistant Development Officer (ADO) of the Social Welfare Department.

According to the government website, the government provides ₹51,000 under this scheme, of which ₹35,000 goes to the girl, ₹10,000 for purchasing matrimonial materials and ₹6,000 for the event.
