Maldivian Defence Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon will embark on a three-day visit to India starting Wednesday to strengthen bilateral ties amid improving relations between the two nations. During his visit, Maumoon will hold comprehensive talks with India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and meet senior government officials in New Delhi.

The visit comes more than eight months after India withdrew its military personnel from the Maldives in response to a request from the pro-China president Mohamed Muizzu. The withdrawal followed Muizzu’s assumption of office in November 2023, when he demanded the removal of Indian military personnel, leading to a strain in relations. However, the diplomatic climate has since warmed, and Muizzu has expressed his intent to rebuild ties with India, including during his visit to Delhi in October.

On January 8, Rajnath Singh will meet with Maumoon to discuss key aspects of defence cooperation, such as training, joint exercises, and defence projects aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Forces. The ministers will also explore opportunities for defence equipment supply.

The Maldives holds a significant position in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which seeks to foster stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region. Both countries play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the region, aligning with India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

Maumoon’s trip will also include visits to Goa and Mumbai, highlighting the continued importance of bilateral maritime cooperation. Despite the recent tensions, the Maldives remains one of India’s crucial maritime neighbors.
