Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, warning against idol immersion in Yamuna in Delhi, 6-yr jail term reminder

Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, a warning has been issued in Delhi against immersion of idols in the Yamuna river and other water bodies.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee asked district magistrates to ensure that the idol immersion ban is not violated in Ganeshotsav and Durga Puja celebrations. Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on August 31 and immersion is on September 9.

Urban local bodies have been asked to create artificial ponds for idol immersion. Delhi Police has been directed to check the entry of vehicles carrying plaster of paris (POP) idols into the city.

Hazardous chemicals used in many idols pose risks of cancer, respiratory ailments, and skin infection in humans who consume infected fish. Violations are punishable with a fine of Rs 50,000 or a jail term of up to six years.
