CBI Probes Delays in 2021 Kolkata Post-Poll Violence Case

Kolkata, July 4 (PTI) - A special CBI court has raised concerns over the prolonged investigation into the alleged 2021 post-poll murder of a man in Kolkata.

On Friday, the court issued summons for 18 accused individuals, instructing them to appear before it on July 18.

The individuals summoned include ruling Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor Swapan Samaddar.

The case revolves around the death of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, who was allegedly beaten to death in the Kankurgachi area of east Kolkata following the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections in a bout of post-poll violence.

The court expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over delays in completing the probe and urged the agency to expedite the process.

An investigation into Sarkar's murder had been delegated to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

The agency has already submitted a charge sheet in the case.

The court further instructed the CBI attorney to provide the accused with copies of the charge sheet.
