Massive IndiGo Flight Cancellations Impact Rajya Sabha Discourse

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) IndiGo's recent cancellation of around 500 flights over the past two days drew attention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, as Congress member Pramod Tiwari highlighted the airline's dominant market position and the resultant challenges faced by MPs and ordinary citizens.

During Zero Hour, Tiwari raised concerns, noting the impact of the flight cancellations on several parliamentarians who had planned travels for the weekend.

"There is an issue that concerns many, and I believe you will agree with me. IndiGo has cancelled 500 flights on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm bringing up this pressing issue," Tiwari remarked.

He explained that several members had scheduled flights to return home on Friday, with return plans for Monday, which have now become problematic.

"This situation has emerged due to the monopoly of a single airline. Through you, I would like to request the minister responsible to address the issue and inform the House about the resolution timeline. Is the government taking any steps?" asked Tiwari.

Addressing the concerns, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju assured the House that the government is investigating the issue.

"Ahead of the House session, I consulted the Civil Aviation Minister. The government is evaluating the technical challenges faced by the airline. I've asked the civil aviation minister to prepare an explanation as members are expected to discuss this," Rijiju stated.

He emphasized the importance of updating both the House and the public about the situation.
