Indian shot in Ukraine: After Harjot claims 'no help', Modi govt says 'in close touch' | Russia war

Hours after the plight of an Indian student who suffered bullet injuries in Ukraine came to light, the Indian government commented on the situation.

Speaking to reporters via video call, Harjot Singh had claimed that he was shot thrice during a gunbattle in Ukraine's capital Kyiv. The incident occurred on February 27, when he was trying to escape to Lviv in a taxi. Harjot said that he fainted and regained consciousness 4 days later in a Kyiv hospital. Subsequently, he contacted the Indian embassy, and while officials made promises of helping him, they are yet to deliver.

Harjot said, "I spoke to embassy officials every day, and they promised help every day. There's a big difference between promising and doing. If a chartered plane is sent after I die, then it doesn't matter."

On March 1, the Indian government had claimed that no Indian nationals are left in Kyiv, according to available information.

After Harjot's video appeal to rescue him, the government said that it was in close touch with him, but it wasn't easy for officials to re-enter Kyiv to reach him. Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for Ministry of External Affairs, said, "Our embassy is in close touch with him. We are trying to ascertain his exact medical status."
