India slips to 101st rank on Global Hunger Index, behind Pakistan and Bangladesh

India slipped to 101st rank out of 116 on the Global Hunger Index 2021. India has fallen 7 ranks from it's previous post at 94th position.

India is also now trailing behind its neighbours Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. However, the report, prepared jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe, mentioned that all four countries have an 'alarming' level of hunger, despite Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan being ahead of India in feeding their citizens.

The GHI score is calculated on four indicators — undernourishment; child wasting, child stunting and child mortality all under the age of 5.

However, India has shown improvement in indicators like the under-5 mortality rate, prevalence of stunting among children and prevalence of undernourishment owing to inadequate food, the report said.

Food security is under assault on multiple fronts, the report said, adding that worsening conflict, weather extremes associated with global climate change, and the economic and health challenges associated with Covid-19 are all driving hunger.

Stating that the fight against hunger is dangerously off track, the report said based on the current GHI projections, the world as a whole — and 47 countries in particular — will fail to achieve even a low level of hunger by 2030.
