India's first reaction to Iranian strikes on Pakistan's Balochistan

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that it "understands" Iran's actions against terror groups based in Pakistan, and said that it holds an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism.

India's reaction came hours after Tehran confirmed that it bombed militant group Jaish al-Adl's bases in Balochistan, the region bordering both countries.

"This is a matter between Iran and Pakistan. Insofar as India is concerned, we have an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism. We understand actions that countries take in their self defence,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.

The airstrikes were vehemently condemned by Pakistan, calling it a “blatant violation" of its airspace. It also claimed the missiles also killed two children. Tuesday's strike hit a village in the vast south-western border province of Balochistan.

In a statement, Pakistan said it “reserves the right to respond” to what it called an illegal and unprovoked attack.

“The responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran,” it added.

However, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, speaking in Davos, insisted that they only targeted Iranian terrorists on the soil of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, China has urged Pakistan and Iran to show "restraint" and "avoid actions that would lead to an escalation of tension".

Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that Beijing saw the countries as "close neighbours".
