India asks citizens to leave coup-hit Niger 'as soon as possible'

India’s Ministry of External Affairs urged citizens to leave Niger 'as soon as possible' as political uncertainty rises in the African nation after a coup.

MEA spokesperson said that around 250 Indians are currently in Niger, adding that they were safe.

The advisory also urged Indians to take 'utmost precautions' while crossing borders as Niger’s airspace has been closed.

'Those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes,' the advisory released on Friday said. It also advised Indian nationals to register themselves with the embassy.

Niger has been hit with multiple sanctions from the West and other African nations after a coup last month. The democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the junta.
