IIT Jodhpur Professor Arrested for Abusing Director, Later Released

Jodhpur, Sep 4 (PTI) An assistant professor from IIT Jodhpur has been arrested for allegedly abusing and manhandling the institution's director during a departmental meeting, according to police officials on Thursday.

The professor was subsequently released on bail, but was later suspended by the IIT administration. The incident unfolded during a meeting on Wednesday morning when a dispute between Director Avinash Kumar Agrawal and Assistant Professor Deepak Kumar Arora from the Chemical Engineering department escalated. The altercation allegedly became physical, resulting in injuries to both parties.

SHO (Karwad) Lekhraj Siyag confirmed that both the director and professor have filed counter-complaints, initiating an investigation.

Registrar Ankur Gupta filed a complaint on behalf of Director Agrawal against Professor Arora. The complaint accuses Arora of assaulting the director, obstructing government work, and using caste-related slurs. Director Agrawal reportedly sustained a foot injury during the incident.

In response, Arora filed an FIR against the director and other associates, accusing them of wrongful confinement, obstruction of official duties, and assault.

Sources revealed that Arora's aggression was exacerbated when staff from the director's office attempted to intervene, resulting in an employee being assaulted and sustaining an arm injury. Arora allegedly used caste-based derogatory language and issued threats against the employee and his family.

The conflict reportedly erupted after the director criticized the performance of Arora’s department over the past five years. In his defense, Arora challenged the director by pointing out the lack of significant achievements by the IIT under his leadership.
