Hijab row: schools and colleges in Karnataka to re-open after Karnataka HC's orders

Karnataka Hijab Row: The Karnataka govt has decided to resume schools and colleges in the state after a direction from the High Court.

Classes till 10th standard will resume from February 14 with pre-university and degree colleges opening after that.

The Karnataka High Court bench hearing the petition against the ban on hijabs said it will hear the case on a day-to-day basis while instructing the govt to reopen educational institutions. The court also urged everyone to maintain peace and asked students not to wear religious dress at colleges until an order is passed.

The hijab row started in December end when a few students started coming to the government pre-university college in Udupi wearing hijab. Protesting against it, some Hindu students turned up wearing saffron scarves.

The row spread to other educational institutions in different parts of the state and the protests took a violent turn at some place earlier this week, prompting the government on Tuesday to declare three days holiday for the institutions.
