Hijab row: HC asks students not to insist on wearing 'religious things' till order is passed

The Karnataka High court hearing the hijab issue on Thursday asked students not to insist on wearing clothes on campuses which can instigate people till the matter is resolved.

Posting the matter for Monday, the court said it will pass a verdict on the issue but ordered schools and colleges to resume classes while telling students not to 'insist on wearing religious things' till then.

Senior lawyer Sanjay Hedge, who is representing the petitioner, told the High Court that there is neither a special provision dealing with uniforms in Karnataka Education Act nor is there any provision for penalty for infraction of a uniform code.

Meanwhile the High Court said it is considering the issue of whether the wearing of a headscarf comes within the Fundamental Rights and it also considering whether wearing a headscarf is an essential part of the religious practice.
