India's first Left Ventricular Assist Device implantation performed at Army Hospital (R&R)

Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi Cantt has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by performing India's first-ever Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device at a government institution.

This marks a historic achievement for the Armed Forces Medical Services as well. The procedure was successfully carried out on a 49-year-old woman, the wife of an Armed Forces veteran, who had been on the heart transplant waiting list for over two years.

The LVAD, commonly referred to as a 'mechanical heart,' is a critical life-saving device for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure, according to a press release from the Ministry of Defence.

The HeartMate 3 LVAD uses state-of-the-art technology to enhance heart function, offering renewed hope for patients with severe cardiac conditions.

At present, the patient is recovering well under close medical supervision, demonstrating the success of the collaborative effort.

This achievement highlights Army Hospital's dedication to medical excellence and reinforces its role as a leader in providing advanced medical care, the release noted.
