'Victorious' farmers call off their historic 14-month-long agitation

Farmers groups on Thursday called off their historic 14-month-long protest.

The decision to call off the agitation came after Centre agreed to farmers demands on forming a committee on legal guarantee on MSP, withdrawing cases against farmers lodged in different states during the course of the protest.

The Centre has also assured the farmers that UP and Haryana governments have in principle agreed on compensation for farmers who died during the year-long agitation.

Farmers started their agitation against the three controversial farm laws brought in by the Modi government in September last year. The farmers assembled and stayed on Delhi borders from November onwards.

The protesters braved harsh weather, media and government barbs, and police action, but in the end emerged victorious as they forced the mighty Modi government to surrender.

On the occasion of Gurupurab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the farm laws and apologised to the farmers.
