Delhi CM Leads BJP Protest Over Women's Reservation Bill Defeat

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) — Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led a protest with BJP MLAs at the Delhi Assembly premises on Tuesday, reacting to the defeat of a Constitutional amendment bill aimed at introducing reservation for women in the Lok Sabha. This demonstration took place just before the special Assembly session scheduled to discuss the bill and opposition from Congress and other parties.

Participants, including several Delhi government ministers, chanted slogans emphasizing that the "humiliation" of women would not be tolerated by the nation. BJP members and ministers also symbolically donned black armbands as part of their protest.

Later in the day, the BJP government plans to introduce a censure motion against the opposition over the bill's defeat. Chief Minister Gupta expressed disappointment, noting that women across India were hopeful the 33 percent reservation would be approved during the recent Lok Sabha session, which did not happen. She accused the opposition of being "deeply disappointing" and betraying women.

The Congress and other opposition parties, who voted against the bill, argued that the government’s real aim was to pursue delimitation before conducting a caste census. The bill received support from 298 members, while 230 MPs opposed it. For the bill to pass, a two-thirds majority, or 352 votes out of 528 members who voted, was required.
