The weather department has issued an ‘orange’ alert in many parts predicting heavy rains for the next 4-5 days. The official monsoon season is yet to hit the subcontinent. According to IMD, Kerala will see the first Monsoon shower of the season on May 27, which is 5 days earlier than usual.

The Supreme Court Friday transferred the civil suit filed by Hindu devotees on Gyanvapi mosque from civil judge (senior division) to district judge, Varanasi saying looking at the complexities and sensitivity of the issue, it is better for a senior judicial officer to handle the case.
A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and PS Narasimha said that it is not casting any aspersion on the civil judge (senior division) who was earlier dealing with the suit.
The top court directed the district judge to first decide the application under Order 7 Rule 11 of CPC (on maintainability) filed by the Mosque committee saying the civil suit is barred by a law of Parliament be decided upon the transfer of papers from the civil judge (senior division).
The top court said that its earlier interim order of May 17 directing protection of the area where ‘Shivling’ is said to be found and allowing Muslims to offer ‘Namaz’ in mosque premises shall remain in operation till the maintainability of the suit is decided by the district judge and thereafter for eight weeks to allow the aggrieved parties approach the higher court.
The bench also directed the district magistrate to make adequate arrangements for ‘wazu’ (ablution) for the Muslims coming for offering Namaz in the mosque in consultation with the parties involved in the dispute.

A man's recent adventure with his dog has earned the ire of the Badrinath-Kedarnath temple committee. 
An FIR was lodged at the behest of the committee's president Ajendra Ajay against a Noida man for taking his dog to the Kedarnath temple. 
After videos of the man and his best friend's adventure went viral, the temple committee demanded stern action saying the visuals have hurt the religious sentiments of people, as per PTI reports. 
The Noida man was identified as Vikash Tyagi, had taken his pet Husky named Nawab to the holy shrine during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. His video of the visit shows Tyagi grabbing the paws of the dog and making it touch the Nandi's statue. The video also shows a priest putting 'tilak' on the pet dog.
Since the FIR, Tyagi has taken to the internet to defend his action on his social media handle, saying he has been visiting temples with his dog for four years, 'so why this drama now?' and saying that his dog was also a creation of god. 
Tyagi has earned the support of the internet, but the temple committee has demanded stern action against him.

It was embarrassment for the West Bengal Education Minister Paresh Chandra Adhikari and his daughter when the Calcutta High Court ruled that she can’t keep her government teacher job and would have to return the salary she took from 2018.   The High Court dismissed Ankita Adhikari’s employment in a government-aided school and ruled that she deposit the salary paid to her since November 2018 in two instalments with the registrar. The high court was hearing a petition filed by a candidate who claimed that she was deprived of the position despite having secured higher marks than Ankita in the recruitment examination.   The CBI is also probing the minister over his daughter's alleged illegal appointment and in fact he was grilled by the central agency in their Kolkata office on Friday.  The central agency had on Thursday filed an FIR against Adhikari after he failed to meet the deadline set by the high court for appearance before its sleuths in connection with the case. Adhikari, along with his daughter, was booked for cheating and dishonesty, criminal conspiracy and corruption.

A shocking case has been reported at West Delhi's Rajouri Garden where a housemaid was allegedly assaulted by the couple on Sunday. According to the police the 48-year-old woman laboured as a house help and was beaten up by the accused couple who have chopped her hair as well, Police recorded the victim's statement.
A case has been registered under voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, and assault The victim is identified as Rajni who hails from Siliguri in West Bengal and works in Delhi as domestic help.
The placement agency owner reportedly said that the couple dropped Rajni at his office in very poor condition. After some time he noticed that she was lying in her urine and wasn't able to move. He immediately rushed to the Safdarjung hospital where Rajni claims on Sunday the couple dragged her out of her room and chopped off her hair. She had injuries all over her body, he added. Police said the medical examination report of Safdarjung Hospital asserted that she had suffered from “physical assault”, “head trauma, and was “vomiting”. She also had injuries on her eyes, face, limbs, abdomen along with other body parts.Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said that all efforts are being made to arrest the accused couple.

Over 200 kgs of heroin worth ₹1,526 crore was recovered by the Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Friday in an unusual mid-sea drug bust off the coast of Lakshadweep Islands.
A thrilling video shared by news agency ANI shows coast guards chasing down two boats 'Prince' and 'Little Jesus' amidst very rough seas. The boats were spotted after several days of continuous search and monitoring under a joint operation code-named “Operation Khojbeen.” Both boats were intercepted by officers of ICG and DRI.
Operation “Khojbeen” was launched after DRI officials gathered intel that said two Indian boats would be sailing from the coast of Tamil Nadu and would receive narcotics in huge quantities somewhere in the Arabian sea during the second/third week of May 2022.
"Thorough search of both the boats was carried out at the Coast Guard District Headquarters at Kochi, which resulted in heroin recovery of 218 packets of 1 kg each. Seized drug appears to be of high-grade heroin and its value in the international illicit market is estimated to be around ₹1,526 crore," a ministry statement said as per news agency PTI.
This is the fourth major drug bust by DRI in the past month. Earlier, DRI recovered 205.6 kg of heroin from a commercial import consignment of gypsum powder at the Kandla port on April 20, 2022, 396 kg of thread (laced with heroin) at Pipavav port on April 29, 2022, and 62 kg of heroin at Air Cargo Complex, IGI New Delhi on May 10, 20222, totally valued at approximately Rs. 2500 crores in the international illicit market.

Assam coordinator of National Register of Citizens or NRC Hitesh Dev Sarma has lodged a complaint with the CID against his predecessor, Prateek Hajela, and others accusing them of committing “anti-national” and criminal activities while updating the register.  In his complaint, Sarma has alleged anomalies in Family Tree Verification and other document verification processes. Family Trees were drawn to establish legacy data accurately during the updating process of the citizenship document. Sarma has alleged that no order for quality check during the Family Tree Matching phase was issued by Hajela. The complainant said the software used in the process also had no scope for quality checks, thus “giving the verifying officers a free hand to upload wrong results to fulfil their vested interests”. Sarma said Prateek Hajela might have intentionally avoided the mandatory quality checks by ordering the use of such a software and “facilitated entry of names of ineligible persons into the NRC which can be seen as an anti-national act affecting national security” The CID is, however, yet to register an FIR against those being accused who included several officers and data entry operators associated with the process.  The NRC, an official record of Indian citizens living in Assam, was updated under the supervision of the Supreme Court and released on August 31 in 2019, leaving out more than 19 lakh applicants.   However, it has not been notified by the Registrar General of India. Hajela, a 1995 batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, had been appointed by the apex court as the NRC state coordinator in 2013. He was released from the charge in November 2019, and the court ordered his transfer from Assam to his home state Madhya Pradesh.

Associate professor of Delhi University's Hindu College Ratan Lal was arrested on Friday night for his objectionable social media post referring to claims about a 'Shivling' found inside Varanasi's Gyanvapi mosque complex, police said.
They said Lal was arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 295A (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion) by the Cyber Police Station, North.
An FIR was lodged against Lal on Tuesday night based on a complaint filed by a Delhi-based lawyer.
In his complaint, advocate Vineet Jindal said Lal had recently shared a "derogatory, inciting and provocating tweet on the Shivling".
The statement made by Lal on his Twitter account is "instigating and provoking", he said in the complaint.
The statement was posted on the issue of a 'Shivling' found in the Gyanvapi mosque complex which is very sensitive in nature and the matter is pending before the court, the lawyer said in his complaint.
Defending his post earlier, Lal had said, "In India, if you speak about anything, someone or the other's sentiment will be hurt. So this is nothing new. I am a historian and have made several observations. As I wrote them down, I have used very guarded language in my post and still this. I will defend myself."

Amid Monkeypox cases being reported from some countries, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has directed the National Centre for Disease Control and the ICMR to keep a close watch on the situation, official sources said Friday.
The Union health ministry has also directed airport and port health officers to be vigilant, they said.
"They have been instructed that any sick passenger with a travel history to Monkeypox-affected countries be isolated and samples sent to the BSL4 facility of the National Institute of Virology in Pune for an investigation," an official source said.
He added, "The Union Health Minister on Thursday directed the National Centre for Disease Control and the ICMR to keep a close watch and monitor the situation in India." Cases of Monkeypox have been reported from the UK, the USA, Portugal, Spain, and some other European countries.
In humans, the symptoms of Monkeypox are similar to but milder than those of smallpox.
According to the WHO, Monkeypox typically manifests in humans with fever, rashes and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications.
Monkeypox is usually a self-limited disease with the symptoms lasting from two to four weeks.
It can also take a severe from, with the WHO saying the case fatality ratio has been around 3-6 per cent in recent times.
Monkeypox virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding.
The clinical presentation of monkeypox resembles that of smallpox, the WHO says.
Transmission of the disease can also occur via the placenta from mother to fetus (which can lead to congenital Monkeypox) or close contact during and after birth, the world health body says.
While close physical contact is a well-known risk factor for transmission, it is unclear at this time if monkeypox can be transmitted specifically through sexual transmission routes, according to the WHO.
