Chandrayaan-3 landing: story behind ‘Neil Armstrong meeting Malayali on Moon’ joke

As India prepares to land on the moon, an old joke about NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong and Malayali meeting on the moon has resurfaced.

The classic joke is a reference to Kerala’s high migration numbers. It implies that you will find a Malayali person everywhere you go.

The joke extends itself and describes what the moon would look like if the Malayali community had populated it, including old Malayalam songs playing the background and a board that reads “Matham parayaruth,” which translates to “don’t talk religion here.”

Kerala’s migration numbers have been high, with many going overseas seeking new jobs and pursuing higher education. The highest tally of passports issued in India in the last decade was recorded in the southern state, India Today reported.
