Wanted drug producer deported to India from UAE: CBI

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) — In a significant operation coordinated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) through Interpol and in conjunction with Mumbai police, an alleged synthetic narcotics producer was deported to India from the UAE on Friday. The individual in question, Kubbawala Mustafa, who was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, was escorted by a four-member team of state police and brought to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. Officials stated that this coordinated effort successfully returned Mustafa to face justice in India.

The International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU) of CBI, collaborating with NCB-Abu Dhabi, played a crucial role in facilitating the extradition of Mustafa, who was wanted in connection with illicit drug manufacturing. A synthetic drugs manufacturing facility in Sangli operated under the alleged direction of Mustafa from abroad was busted by the Mumbai police, resulting in the seizure of 126.141 kg of mephedrone.

The CBI spokesperson highlighted that through diligent follow-up with Interpol and NCB-Abu Dhabi, Mustafa was geo-located in the UAE. The Mumbai authorities had previously filed a chargesheet and a special court had issued an open-dated arrest warrant against Mustafa. Efforts culminated in a Red Notice being published through Interpol on November 25, 2024, upon the Mumbai police's request.

The breakthrough came when NCB-Abu Dhabi communicated on June 19, 2025, indicating their authorities' readiness to support sending a security mission to the UAE to expedite Mustafa's return. Subsequently, a specialized team of Mumbai police was formed to escort him back from the UAE. This marks a successful coordination between international and Indian agencies in addressing cross-border crime.
