'Canada is a safe country': Ottawa rejects India's travel warning amid Nijjar row

Amid tensions over Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder, India has issued a travel warning to its citizens to avoid visiting parts of Canada.

The Canadian government rejected the warning, with Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc saying that "Canada is a safe country".

India's advisory urged citizens to "exercise utmost caution" in view of “growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada”.

The warning was issued after Canada asked its citizens in India to "observe a high degree of caution".

Earlier, India expelled a top Canadian diplomat following a similar move by Ottawa.

The tensions rose after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau suggested the possibility of the Indian government's involvement in the killing of Nijjar.
