Mumbai, Sep 4 (PTI) — In an exciting fusion of musical brilliance, the much-anticipated live-action adaptation of "Ramayana" will feature the talents of Hans Zimmer and A R Rahman. The collaboration promises a groundbreaking background score that is both innovative and culturally resonant.

The internationally acclaimed musicians have embarked on this ambitious project for filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari's depiction of the Hindu epic, "Ramayana." Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus Studios is producing the film, which boasts a star-studded cast including Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi playing Goddess Sita, and Yash as the formidable Ravana.

In a conversation with PTI, Rahman expressed his admiration for Zimmer, saying, "Hans Zimmer is a prolific composer, who has achieved incredible things. Our acquaintance dates back to 2009, and I have immense respect for him. He previously extended an invitation for collaboration, but due to other commitments, I could not oblige."

Hans Zimmer, a maestro with two Academy Awards to his name, is known for his iconic soundtracks in Hollywood hits such as “The Lion King”, "Gladiator", “Pirates of the Caribbean", “Inception”, “Interstellar”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, and “Dune”.

Rahman, lauded for his double Oscar-winning work on 2008's "Slumdog Millionaire," credited producer Namit Malhotra for facilitating their collaboration. "We've had productive meetings, having convened three to four times already. The project is still evolving, so there's limited detail to disclose at the moment," Rahman shared.

With "Ramayana," Rahman emphasized the duo’s commitment to creating a unique score that caters to a global audience. He remarked, "‘Ramayana’ is deeply ingrained in our culture. In my school, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, we frequently staged plays like ‘Ramayana’, ‘Mahabharat’, or ‘Shakuntala’. These cultural elements are a part of me."

The challenge was to craft music that stands apart from previous scores while maintaining cultural relevance. Rahman elaborated, "Our aim is to resonate worldwide and ensure cultural authenticity. The trailer music provides a glimpse of our direction, and we're meticulously attentive about cultural nuances."

"Ramayana," envisioned as a grand cinematic experience, will also feature Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lord Lakshman. The epic tale will be released in two parts, with the first installment set for a Diwali 2026 release, followed by the second part in Diwali 2027.
