'Indian 2' trailer out: 'Senapthy' Kamal Haasan returns to fight 'second war of Independence', watch

Kamal Haasan is back as Senapathy to continue his fight against injustice with 'Indian 2'. The sequel comes 18 years after the release of the 1996 cult vigilante film, which was India's official entry for the Oscars that year. If the trailer is anything to go by, 'Indian 2' promises another epic tale infused with action and patriotism. Director Shankar, who helmed the first part, has returned for the second instalment as well.

The trailer begins in the heart of a city in India where multiple scams and social injustice have left the youth hopeless. A woman's voiceover briefs out the issues that Indians are grappling with, such as unemployment, heavy tax burdens, and lack of basic facilities among others. We are then introduced to Siddharth's character, a driven young man who aims to bring change but needs a stronger force to chip in to fight against the system. He is soon reminded of his childhood hero – Senapathy (Kamal Haasan), a powerful vigilante, who seems to have receded to the mountains after fighting an intense battle against injustice.

However, Senapathy soon strikes back for the 'second war of Independence'. He goes after the rich and powerful who are taking the country to the dogs. He disguises himself in multiple avatars to safeguard his identity as he fights the goons, performing some high-octane action sequences. When Siddharth's character meddles in Senapathy's business and says that he's going against his ideals of honesty, Senapathy says he suggests he take the Gandhian way, but asserts he will follow the footsteps of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, 'Indian' 2 will be released on July 12 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
