New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) Filmmakers Kiran Rao and Biju Toppo have joined forces with director Aranya Sahay as executive producers for the critically acclaimed film "Humans in the Loop." This film marks Sahay's debut feature and centers around the life of a tribal woman working as an AI data labeller. The movie has become a standout favorite on the independent film festival circuit.

"I loved 'Humans in the Loop' from the very first viewing. It is deeply moving and thought-provoking," said Kiran Rao, whose film "Laapataa Ladies" is India’s official selection for the Academy Awards in 2024. "The film carries an important global message about technology, labor, and the risk of losing valuable knowledge systems. Supporting this project felt urgent and necessary."

Biju Toppo, known for pioneering tribal cinema, brings his extensive experience documenting indigenous communities' challenges and resilience to the project. "'Humans in the Loop' speaks to the lives of people I have known and seen," he explained. "For too long, Adivasi perspectives have remained invisible. This film boldly offers our viewpoint."

Produced by Mathivanan Rajendran, Sarabhi Ravichandran, Shilpa Kumar, and Sahay, under Storiculture’s Impact Fellowship and SAUV Films, the film takes place in Jharkhand. It follows Nehma, an Oraon tribal woman, as she navigates a livelihood in AI data labeling, illuminating the obscured labor behind advanced technologies. The film raises critical questions about technological progress and the exclusion and marginalization of indigenous knowledge systems.

"Humans in the Loop" has already garnered accolades, winning the Grand Prix award from FIPRESCI-India, alongside Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine as Light." Filmmaker Aranya Sahay expressed gratitude for the support of Rao and Toppo, describing it as giving him "immense courage."

"After a year of micro-community screenings, we are reaching the momentum needed to release the film theatrically," Sahay said. "'Humans in the Loop' is not just about one woman in Jharkhand; it's a story about all of us questioning the future we are building with technology."

The producers have adopted an innovative distribution model, funded by the Museum of Imagined Futures, to ensure broad reach across India. The movie will debut via a blend of theatrical and curated indie showcases, beginning September 5 at Cinepolis Andheri in Mumbai. Subsequent screenings are scheduled for Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Bengaluru from September 12. The creators are also inviting audiences to request screenings in their own cities.
