Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' Shines at Venice Film Festival

Los Angeles, Sep 1 (PTI) — Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro recently made an intriguing statement at the Venice Film Festival. Attending the event on August 30 for the screening of his newest film "Frankenstein," which stars Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, del Toro expressed his thoughts on technology and human nature. He remarked, "I’m not afraid of artificial intelligence. I’m afraid of natural stupidity."

The movie "Frankenstein" set a remarkable record by receiving a 13-minute standing ovation, as reported by Variety. The film features Isaac as an unconventional scientist and Elordi as his perilous creation. This work is a contemporary adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 literary classic.

During the press conference following the screening, del Toro clarified that his aim wasn't to draw parallels to artificial intelligence within the film. "It’s not intended as a metaphor for that," he commented. "We live in a time of terror and intimidation, certainly. And there’s no more urgent task than to remain, in a time where everything is pushing towards a bipolar, understanding of our humanity. The movie tries to show imperfect characters and the right we have to remain imperfect, and the right we have to understand each other under the most oppressive circumstances," he continued.

The film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival will be succeeded by a limited theatrical release on October 17, followed by a global release on Netflix on November 7. Alongside Elordi and Isaac, the cast includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. Guillermo del Toro produced the film with J Miles Dale and Scott Stuber.
