FX Announces 'Snowfall' Spinoff with Focus on Leon and Wanda

Los Angeles, Nov 4 (PTI) American broadcaster FX has announced a spinoff series from its renowned crime drama "Snowfall". The new project, which is yet to be titled, will spotlight the characters Leon and Wanda, brought to life by actors Isaiah John and Gail Bean, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

"Snowfall" is acclaimed for its portrayal of the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles, focusing on an African American crime family led by the ambitious drug dealer Franklin Saint, played by Damson Idris. Within the series, Leon is depicted as Franklin’s closest friend and his primary lieutenant in their criminal enterprise, while Wanda, introduced in the second season, transitions from Leon's girlfriend to wife and grapples with a crack cocaine addiction before ultimately achieving sobriety.

The spinoff is set in 1990s Los Angeles, following the conclusion of the original series. According to the plot synopsis provided by Malcolm Spellman, the series will explore the journey of a recovering addict striving to popularize West Coast rap during a tumultuous era marked by gang violence and record labels’ attempts to capitalize on hip hop culture.

"This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution," explained Nick Grad, president of FX, in a statement. He emphasized the role of Malcolm Spellman, who previously collaborated with FX on the documentary series "Hip Hop Uncovered" and praised his comprehensive expertise on the subject matter. Grad further noted, "This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean, and as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. 'Snowfall' was among FX's most successful dramas, and we're thrilled that veterans like Dave Andron and Thomas Schlamme from the original 'Snowfall' creative team are also involved."

The spinoff will feature significant contributions from actors Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III.
