Domestic abuse charges against ‘Rick and Morty’ creator Justin Roiland dropped

Justin Roiland, who co-created the Cartoon Network animated series ‘Rick and Morty’, has been cleared of domestic violence charges. According to Variety, Kimberly Edds, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s office, in a statement said, ‘We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.’
Roiland has responded to the dismissal on Twitter. His note reads, ‘I have always known that these claims were false — and I never had any doubt that this day would come. I’m thankful that this case has been dismissed but, at the same time, I’m still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process.’

He added that he is ‘disappointed that so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of a bitter ex trying to bypass due process and have me ‘canceled.’’

As per a criminal complaint filed in May 2020, Roiland was charged with domestic battery and false imprisonment after an incident with a woman he was dating. NBC News reported on them in January of this year and in the same month, Roiland appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing.
After the charges were reported, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network cut ties with Roiland and said his roles would be recast. 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals, which produce two other animated series Roiland worked on, did the same.
The companies declined to comment on Wednesday.
