Vodafone Idea explores satellite partnerships amid competitor moves

Vodafone Idea is exploring satellite partnerships, including with Starlink, following deals by competitors like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. The move aims to enhance connectivity in rural areas, boosting Vodafone Idea's stock by nearly 5%.

Vodafone Idea explores satellite partnerships amid competitor moves

Vodafone Idea has initiated exploratory discussions with several satellite communication providers, including Starlink, the telecom company announced on Wednesday.

This move comes shortly after its competitors in the Indian telecom sector secured deals with Starlink, the satellite internet division of Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The announcement follows a request for clarification from Indian stock exchanges regarding recent movements in Vodafone Idea's stock and a report from the financial news outlet Moneycontrol.

In response, shares of Vodafone Idea experienced a nearly 5% increase on Wednesday.

"Our goal is to extend services—both fixed and mobile—to underserved areas where satellite technology is particularly effective," Vodafone Idea’s Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, explained to Moneycontrol.

He further outlined the strategy of delivering fixed wireless broadband in rural locales and smaller towns, areas where traditional service rollouts would be costly.

This announcement comes on the heels of agreements between SpaceX's Starlink and Indian telecom giants Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. These agreements position Starlink to deliver internet services in India, contingent upon receiving government approvals.

As part of their agreements, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio will stock Starlink equipment in their retail outlets, providing the US-based satellite communications company with thousands of distribution points throughout India.

Vodafone Idea’s exploration into satellite collaboration underscores an increasing trend among Indian telecom operators to harness satellite technology to enhance connectivity, particularly in remote and rural areas.
