Tesla launches Model Y in India at Rs 60 lakhs, opens first experience centre in Mumbai

Tesla has made its much-anticipated debut in India, the world's third-largest automobile market, by launching its electric midsize SUV — the Tesla Model Y.

Priced from nearly ₹60 lakh, the Model Y is currently the only offering from Tesla available to Indian consumers.

The SUV will come in two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive version priced at ₹60 lakh, and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version at ₹68 lakh. Buyers will also have the option to add Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) package for an additional ₹6 lakh.

Available in six colour options, only the Stealth Grey variant will come at no extra cost. Other finishes — Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Ultra Red, Quicksilver, and Glacier Blue — will carry an added price tag. Customers can choose between white and black interiors, with all variants featuring a standard five-seat configuration.

Currently, Tesla has restricted deliveries and registrations to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, according to information listed on the company’s official website. Prices are expected to vary slightly depending on state-specific taxes and fees. Deliveries of the Model Y are slated to begin in the third quarter of 2025.

Earlier today, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Tesla’s first Experience Centre in India, located at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. Speaking at the launch, Fadnavis remarked, "I welcome Tesla here in Mumbai. Tesla has opened an experience centre here, and it is a statement that Tesla has arrived and it's a statement they Tesla has arrived in the right city and right state."

The opening of the Experience Centre marks a significant milestone in Tesla’s India journey, as the brand begins gauging local interest and preparing the groundwork for a broader rollout.

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to explore collaboration opportunities in innovation and technology. The two had previously met in person during PM Modi’s visit to the United States in February.

With India emerging as a key market for electric vehicles, Tesla's entry is expected to intensify competition in the premium EV space while also reinforcing the country's push for sustainable mobility.
