Elon Musk's Neuralink implants brain chip named named 'Telepathy' in first human patient

Elon Musk's Neuralink successfully implanted its first brain chip in a human patient on Sunday. The patient is reportedly recovering well, and initial tests indicate promising results in neuron spike detection, marking a significant milestone for the brain chip startup.

The FDA granted approval for Neuralink's first human trial last year, and the company later sought volunteers willing to have the innovative chips implanted. Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, stating, "The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well. Initial results show promising neuron spike detection."

The inaugural product from Neuralink, named "Telepathy," aims to grant users control over their phones or computers through thought alone. Musk explained, "Enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking. Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal."

Highlighting the potential impact on individuals with paralysis, Musk emphasized in earlier posts that Neuralink's first product could empower people to use their smartphones more efficiently, without the need for manual input.

Neuralink's journey has involved extensive testing on animals, with Musk sharing videos of monkeys playing pong using only their brains. However, these experiments have faced criticism from animal rights groups, such as the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, underscoring the ethical considerations surrounding the development of cutting-edge neurotechnology.

As Neuralink continues its pioneering work, the world watches with anticipation for the possibilities that Telepathy and similar advancements may unlock in the realm of human-computer interaction.

The ambitious initiative seeks to establish direct communication links between the human brain and computers, with the potential to transform the approach to treating neurological disorders like ALS and Parkinson's. Additionally, it envisions boosting human capabilities and fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
