Russian court fines Zoom $1.18 million for operating without local office

Zoom Fined: A Russian court has fined Zoom $1.18 million for operating without opening a local office, reported Reuters. As per the report, the fine had been set at a 10th of Zoom's 2022 revenues in Russia.

Trouble for Zoom

After the start of Russia-Ukraine war, Russia's clampdown on Foreign technology companies has intensified. The companies have been under radar over content, censorship, data and local representation.

This is not the first time Zoom is fined in Russia. Last week, the firm was fined 15 million roubles for repeated failure to store data that it held on Russian citizens on a server in Russia.

Tech Companies Crackdown

Over the last few years the country has heavily fined companies like Alphabet's Google and Apple. In July 2022, Apple was fined nearly $34,000 for being non-compliant with demands that foreign companies provide documents confirming storage and processing of the citizens' personal data occur domestically.
