Consumed by the fresh scent of freedom, the 1950s had a strong flavour of patriotism. The hand-spun khadi symbolised the swadeshi movement. Cloth sarees draped in different styles or simple salwar suits dominated the scene.
The fashion was largely functional and hints of European influences, especially in menswear, could also be observed. Women like Maharani Gayatri Devi, and Hindi cinema&rsquo;s Nargis, Nutan, Suraiya and Meena Kumari were the fashion icons of this era.

The 1960s was the decade that brought us Madhubala&rsquo;s Anarkali suit and the tiered orange saree on Mumtaz. Moving into a new decade, women&rsquo;s clothing became more fashionable and everyone embraced bright colours and prints.&nbsp;

Cool girls &amp; boys of the &lsquo;90s
The decade that birthed Indipop stars like Alisha Chinai and cult films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dil Toh Pagal Hai, the 1990s created trends that are still big today. In 2005, the Lok Sabha had passed a bill to lawfully allow Indian citizens to wear the tricolour as part of their attire, if worn respectably. So any piece of clothing below that cannot have any representation of the Indian National Flag.&nbsp;
In 2020, after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding usage of masks, people started selling and wearing tricolour masks around Independence Day. This was greatly opposed by the Indian policymakers as it was considered a brazen disrespect for the National Flag and consequently such masks were banned across the country.

Maker of&nbsp;affordable and trendy clothes, H&amp;M's factories have been named in several worker abuse reports over the years. Whereas Sabyasachi&nbsp;has been considered a champion for the Indian fashion industry and an ardent supporter of local artisans.
For his part, the designer has claimed in press interviews that 90 per cent of the H&amp;M line has been produced in India and&nbsp;all the patterns in the collaboration are hand-drawn by the Sabyasachi Art&nbsp;Foundation.
Priced between Rs. 2,000 to 10,000, the brand has also steered clear of calling this collection, a 'sustainable' one.&nbsp;
Keeping in mind the pandemic situation, H&amp;M is also pushing for a&nbsp;responsible in-store shopping experience, where customers will be asked to pre-register to shop the collection in stores.
But knowing H&amp;M's history, it is not wrong to question the lack of transparency and actual&nbsp;execution of these tall claims.
