The CBI on Thursday arrested senior Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal from his residence here for allegedly not cooperating in its probe into a cattle smuggling case, an official said.
Mondal was arrested after almost an hour-long interrogation by a CBI team that arrived at the Birbhum district president's house early on Thursday, he said.
"We have arrested him for non-cooperation in the investigation into the cattle smuggling scam," the official told PTI.
Mondal was taken to a hospital for medical check-up, he said.
The TMC leader had twice skipped his scheduled appearance before the central probe agency in the last few days, citing ill-health.

Makki is a US-designated terrorist and brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba head and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
New Delhi and Washington had put a joint proposal to designate Makki as a global terrorist under the 1267 ISIL and Al Qaida Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council but Beijing placed a hold on this proposal at the last minute here.
The US Department of Treasury had in December 2010 designated “Abdul Rauf Azhar, a senior leader of Jaish-e Mohammed (JEM), for acting for or on behalf of JEM." The US said as a senior leader of JeM, Abdul Rauf Azhar “has urged Pakistanis to engage in militant activities. He has served as JEM's acting leader in 2007, as one of JEM's most senior commanders in India, and as JEM's intelligence coordinator." "In 2008 Azhar was assigned to organise suicide attacks in India. He was also involved with JEM's political wing and has served as a JEM official involved with training camps.” A day before Beijing blocked this latest proposal, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj had said at a Security Council meeting chaired by permanent-member and Council President China that the practice of placing holds and blocks on listing requests without giving any justification must end and asserted that the credibility of the Sanctions Regime at an all-time low.
“An effective functioning of the Sanctions Committees requires them to become more transparent, accountable and objective. The practice of placing holds and blocks on listing requests without giving any justification must end,” Kamboj said.
Kamboj had added that “it is most regrettable that genuine and evidence-based listing proposals pertaining to some of the most notorious terrorists in the world are being placed on hold.
“Double standards and continuing politicisation have rendered the credibility of the Sanctions Regime at an all-time low. We do hope that all members of the UNSC can pronounce together in one voice, sooner than later, when it comes to this collective fight against international terrorism,” she had said.
Earlier also, China, an all-weather friend of Islamabad, has placed holds and blocks on bids by India and its allies to list Pakistan-based terrorists.
In May 2019, India had won a huge diplomatic win at the UN when the global body designated Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a "global terrorist”, a decade after New Delhi had first approached the world body on the issue.
A veto-wielding permanent member of the UN Security Council, China was the sole hold-out in the 15-nation body on the bid to blacklist Azhar, blocking attempts by placing a "technical hold". All decisions of the committee are taken through consensus.
In 2009, India had moved a proposal by itself to designate Azhar.
In 2016 again India moved the proposal with the P3 - the US, the UK and France in the UN's 1267 Sanctions Committee to ban Azhar, also the mastermind of the attack on the air base in Pathankot in January, 2016.

Two terrorists were killed and five soldiers injured in a gunfight when a suspected suicide group tried to enter an Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district early on Thursday, officials said.

Bouncers at a Gurugram pub allegedly beat up a group of visitors after one of them accused a doorman of touching his female friend inappropriately, police said on Wednesday.
Ten, including managers and bouncers of the Udyog Vihar-based club, have been booked in connection with the incident that took place around 2 am on Monday, they said.
One of those assaulted, a manager with a multinational technology company, filed a complaint stating that he had gone to the Casa Denza club with his three friends. He found some other friends at the gate of the club.
He alleged that a bouncer misbehaved with his friend and touched her inappropriately while she was standing in the entry line. He said when she objected, other bouncers and managers gathered there and started abusing her.
"As we all protested, eight bouncers took us to the road, pushing us from the gate and thrashed us. We were injured in the attack. The managers of the club also threatened to kill us if we visited the club again," the complainant alleged.
In the meantime, a passerby made a video of the attack which went viral on social media and after getting information a police team reached the spot who rushed the injured to hospital.
The complainant also alleged that the bouncers snatched a smartwatch and around Rs 12,000 cash. He also submitted the viral video clip with his complaint to police.
Following the complaint, an FIR has been registered against 10 including bouncers and managers of the club under sections 147 (riot), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (causing hurt), 354-A (molestation), 379-A (snatching), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at Udyog Vihar police station.
"We are scanning the CCTV footage of the club and nearby area to identify the accused. They will be nabbed as early as possible," said inspector Anil Kumar, SHO of Udyog Vihar police station.
The club owner and managers could not be contacted for a response despite several attempts.

A home-grown howitzer gun will be used for the ceremonial 21-gun salute during the Independence Day ceremony at Red Fort for the first time, Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar said on Wednesday.
The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has been developed under the government's 'Make in India' initiative by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The ATAGS will give the ceremonial 21-Gun Salute along with the British guns which are being traditionally used till now.
The defence ministry said the initiative to use the indigenously developed gun will stand as a testament to India's growing capacity of developing arms and ammunition indigenously.
The gun has been especially customised, with certain technical specifications being tweaked for the ceremony.
The ministry said a team of DRDO's Armament Research & Development Establishment, Pune, led by scientists and artillery officers worked in the project to make use of the gun possible for the Independence Day ceremony.
The ATAGS project was started in 2013 by the DRDO to replace older guns in service in the Indian Army with a modern 155mm artillery gun.
This specialised gun system is compatible with C4I systems like the Artillery Combat Command and Control System called Shakti for technical fire control, fire planning, deployment management, operational logistics management of the Indian Army.
The defence secretary also said NCC cadets from all districts of the country have been invited to attend the main event at Red Fort.
These cadets will be seated at 'Gyan Path' in front of the Red Fort's ramparts in a geographical formation of the map of India.
Kumar said the cadets will adorn local dresses, symbolising India's cultural diversity, to carry forward the message of 'Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat'.
In continuation to the initiative taken during Republic Day 2022, the section of society, which is usually overlooked, has been invited as special guests for Independence Day as well, he said.
"These include anganwadi workers, street vendors, mudra scheme borrowers, mortuary workers etc. They have been invited to attend the main event at Red Fort," Kumar said.
Kumar said a total of 26 officers and supervisors and 126 cadets from 14 countries -- US, UK, Argentina, Brazil, Fiji, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, The Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Seychelles, the UAE and Uzbekistan -- are already in India for the Independence Day celebrations.
Apart from attending the main event at Red Fort, the youth will be visiting places of cultural and historical importance in Delhi and Agra.
Kumar said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will also be felicitating 25 winners of the 'Veer Gatha contest' (SUPER-25) in New Delhi on August 12.
Veer Gatha, one of the unique projects launched as part of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' was organised to inspire and spread awareness among children about the gallant deeds and sacrifices of the armed forces.
In the nation-wide contest, held between October 21-November 20, over eight lakh students from 4,788 schools were encouraged to share inspirational stories through essays, poems, drawings and multimedia presentations, the ministry said.
Following the success in the first edition, Veer Gatha 2.0 is all set to be launched in September, it said.

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on Wednesday said it is unfortunate that even after 75 years of independence only a few are aware of the constitutional provisions and emphasised that the public must know their constitutional rights and duties.
CJI Ramana, who was speaking as the chief guest at an event by Eastern Book Company to celebrate the release of 'Supreme Court Cases (SCC) pre-1969', stated that the ultimate consumer of justice is the public and thus called for “simple” judgement writing by the judges as well as publication of important judgements of the Supreme Court and high courts in regional languages by law journals.
He said even a “small school kid” in the western countries is aware of his constitution and the laws and asserted “we need that kind of culture”.
“The lawyers and the public must know the constitutional provisions and the Constitution. It is unfortunate that we are now celebrating 75 years of independence but still only a few selected people in the urban areas or the legal professional are aware of the constitutional rights and duties and the constitutional principles,” CJI Ramana said.
“They (people) must know what the Constitution says and how they are entitled (under the laws). What are their rights, how to implement their rights, how to know their duties. It is necessary for us, especially (law journals) to try and introduce at least selected judgements of importance -- crux and not the entire judgement -- in regional languages to enable access in a simple language,” he added.
Acknowledging that translation of judgements in regional languages in a simple manner would entail a financial burden, CJI Ramana added, “I hope some governments can also give some money because they are now starting several projects for popularising the Constitution and the constitutional schemes. We can think of this issue also.” He further said being a judge for 22 years, he was aware of the criticism that judgements are at times “like a thesis” and requested all members of his fraternity to be simple.
"I request all the fraternity members as well as lawyers who are contributing by arguing to try to be simple in judgement (and write) concise, precise and short sentences. People must feel like they are reading a story,” he said.
“Ultimately, at the end of the day, the consumers of justice are the litigant, public or whoever it is, they must know the end result. That is more interesting than our own imaginations and philosophies. That way I think we can help the public a lot. The reasoning and the conclusion needs to be clear. I hope and trust this will happen,” he said.

The government on Wednesday approved Biological E's Corbevax as a precaution dose for those above 18 years fully vaccinated with either Covishield or Covaxin.
This is for the first time that a booster dose that is different from the one used for primary vaccination against Covid has been allowed in the country.
"This provision would be live from August 12," Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter to states and Union territories.
He said that Corbevax will be available as precaution dose after completion of 6 months or 26 weeks from the date of administration of the second dose of either Covaxin or Covishield vaccines for population above 18 years.
"This enables use of Corbevax as a heterologous COVID-19 vaccine for precaution dose administration in this age group," Bhushan said.
There will be no change in existing guidelines for homologous precaution dose administration of Covaxin and Covishield, he said.
The decision has been taken based on scientific evidence, global practices and the recommendations of domain knowledge experts.
India's COVID-19 vaccination program has achieved the historical milestone of administering more than 2 billion doses so far.
About 97 per cent of the 12 plus age population of the country has been covered with at least one dose and about 89 per cent with both doses.

The concept of heterologous booster dose implies the use of a different vaccine from what was used for a primary dose. While under the homologous booster vaccine concept, a person is injected the same vaccine that was used for the previous doses.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27 August, 2022," a law ministry notification said.
Top officials of the department of justice, along with principal secretary to the prime minister P K Mishra met Justice Lalit and handed over the warrant of appointment, sources said.
Justice Lalit has been part of several landmark judgements including the one which held the practice of divorce through instant triple talaq among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional.
A renowned senior advocate, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014.
He shifted his practice to Delhi in January 1986, and in April 2004, he was designated as a senior advocate by the apex court.
He was appointed a special public prosecutor for the CBI to conduct trial in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
He has since been involved in delivery of several landmark judgements of the apex court.
In the triple talaq verdict, while the then CJI J S Khehar and Justice S Abdul Nazeer were in favour of putting on hold the judgement for six months and asking the government to come out with a law to that effect, justices Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman and Lalit held the practice as violative of the Constitution.
Justices Khehar, Joseph and Nariman have since retired.

Ministry of Civil Aviation on Wednesday lifted caps on domestic airfare stating that the order will be effective from August 31.
The order has been notified after a review of the COVID-19 situation which imposed the limits on airfare in 2020. The ministry reiterated that airlines will continue to adhere to COVID guidelines.
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the decision to remove air fare caps was taken after careful analysis of daily demand and prices of air turbine fuel.
The minister added that stabilisation has set in and the sector is poised for growth in domestic traffic in the near future.

The cap on domestic airfare will be removed from August 31, almost 27 months after it was imposed due to Covid-19.&nbsp;
"The decision to remove air fare caps has been taken after careful analysis of daily demand and prices of air turbine fuel (ATF). Stabilisation has set in and we are certain that the sector is poised for growth in domestic traffic in the near future," Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Twitter.
ATF prices have been coming down during the last few weeks after jumping to record levels, primarily due to the Russia-Ukraine war that began on February 24.
On August 1, the price of ATF in Delhi was Rs 1.21 lakh per kilo-litre, which was around 14 per cent lower than last month.
The ministry had imposed lower and upper limits on domestic airfares based on flight durations when services were resumed on May 25, 2020 after a two-month lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, airlines currently cannot charge a passenger less than Rs 2,900 (excluding GST) and more than Rs 8,800 (excluding GST) for domestic flights of less than 40 minutes.
The lower caps were there to protect the financially weaker airlines and the upper caps to protect passengers from high fares.
On Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Ministry stated in an order: "After review of the current status of scheduled domestic operations viz-a-viz passenger demand for air travel...it has been decided to remove the fare bands notified from time to time regarding the airfares with effect from August 31, 2022." The airlines and airport operators must, however, ensure that the guidelines to contain the spread of COVID-19 are strictly adhered to and COVID-appropriate behaviour is strictly enforced by them during travel, it added.
Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan had on June 19 said that he would be happy if the lower and upper limits on airfares were increased but the best solution would be for the airlines to have absolute freedom on airfares.&nbsp;

The Marathi daily also targeted Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who revolted against the Sena leadership in June, saying he “bent the knee” before Delhi.
He (Shinde) should understand that Kumar showed he can survive without it, the editorial said.
The Sena further said the fissures between Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) founder Lalu Prasad must come to an end now.
It also praised Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav, who led the RJD's Assembly polls campaign in 2020, describing him as a "young and popular" leader of Bihar who had posed a challenge to the then BJP-JD(U) alliance.
The RJD and JD(U) had contested against each other in the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls. The ties between Kumar and Lalu Prasad have seen several ups and downs over the last four decades.

A video of a constable bursting into tears and sitting on a dharna over the "poor" quality food provided by the mess at the police lines here has prompted the department to order an inquiry.
In the clip that surfaced on social media on Wednesday, Constable Manoj Kumar was seen staging a protest with a plate of food from the mess.
Kumar was also heard referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's promise to give Rs 1,875 separately for provisions of nutritious food for police constables.
Taking note of the issue, Senior Superintendent of Police Ashish Tiwari has ordered an inquiry.
The SSP said the matter has been noted and Circle Officer (City) Abhishek Srivastava has been asked to probe the quality of food provided by the mess.
The official added that 15 cases were pending against the constable, including indiscipline and remaining absent from duty, and Circle Officer, Police Lines, Hira Lal Kanaujia has been asked to probe them.

Video: UP policeman weeps, stages protest over quality of food&nbsp;

A video of a constable bursting into tears and sitting on a dharna over the "poor" quality food provided by the mess at the police lines here has prompted the department to order an inquiry.
In the clip that surfaced on social media on Wednesday, Constable Manoj Kumar was seen staging a protest with a plate of food from the mess.
Kumar was also heard referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's promise to give Rs 1,875 separately for provisions of nutritious food for police constables.
Taking note of the issue, Senior Superintendent of Police Ashish Tiwari has ordered an inquiry.
The SSP said the matter has been noted and Circle Officer (City) Abhishek Srivastava has been asked to probe the quality of food provided by the mess.
The official added that 15 cases were pending against the constable, including indiscipline and remaining absent from duty, and Circle Officer, Police Lines, Hira Lal Kanaujia has been asked to probe them.
