Mumbai airport's August air traffic reaches 108% of pre-pandemic levels

Mumbai International Airport experienced a significant surge in domestic air traffic during the month of August, reaching 108% of the pre-pandemic levels seen in August 2019 as per a Mint report.

The airport recorded a total of over 4.32 million passengers, marking a remarkable 32% year-on-year increase. In addition to this, international air traffic also witnessed robust growth, with over 1.1 million passengers, representing a 33% increase compared to the previous year.

August saw a total of 20,711 domestic flights and 6,960 international flights at the airport. Among the domestic destinations, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai emerged as the top choices for travelers. On the international front, Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi were the preferred destinations from Mumbai International Airport.

Notable growth in passenger traffic was observed for various international destinations, with Munich experiencing a remarkable 150% increase, followed by Hanoi with 138%, and Istanbul with a 110% rise. Nairobi and Ho Chi Minh also witnessed substantial growth, recording 99% and 96% increases in passenger traffic, respectively, as compared to August 2022.

The airport averaged a daily passenger count of 139,661 throughout the month. In the domestic sector, IndiGo dominated with a 48% market share, followed by Air India at 18% and Vistara at 17%. In the international segment, IndiGo secured a 22% market share, with Air India at 14% and Vistara at 10%.

In terms of cargo, the airport registered a 6% growth in air cargo tonnage, comprising a 3% increase in domestic cargo tonnage and an 8% rise in international cargo tonnage for the month of August 2023.
