Homebuying Age Hits All-Time High in the U.S.: Who Can Afford a Home Today?

Who is buying most of the homes in the United States these days?

If you think it's young people in their late 20s or early 30s, this news might surprise you.

This year, the average age of first-time American homebuyers has reached a new high—38 years old, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). That’s up from 35 just last year.

Looking at repeat buyers, their average age has also climbed, reaching 61, compared to 58 last year.

Overall, the typical buyer's age is now 56, up from 49 in 2023!

So, what’s driving this shift? Rising costs, high-interest rates, and fierce competition are keeping younger buyers out, while older, more experienced buyers are stepping in.

What’s your take on this trend? Is the dream of homeownership slipping further out of reach for young people?
