The world economy may be slowing but it's been a great year for Indian riches. Forbes announced its list of wealthiest people in India, according to which, the combined wealth of India’s 100 richest grew by $25 billion to touch a colossal $800 billion. The top 10 richest Indians are worth a cumulative $385 billion.

The gain was largely due to a record-breaking feat by infrastructure tycoon Gautam Adani, which changed the pecking order at the top for the first time since 2008, according to Fobes. Gautam Adani tripled his weath in 2021 and gradually shot up to become the country’s wealthiest person.

Second on the list of India’s richest is Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries. His net worth currently stands at $88 billion; and is reported to be down from 5 per cent last year.

While Radhakishan Damlani - owner of DMart chain of supermarkets - stands at the third spot on the list, he is followed by Cyrus Poonawalla of the Serum Institute. Damlani has a net worth of $27.6 billion and Poonawalla - $21.5 billion.

There are nine new faces this year, including three from IPOs: Falguni Nayar, a former banker who became India’s richest self-made woman after listing her beauty and fashion retailer Nykaa; ethnic garments maker Ravi Modi; and shoemaker Rafique Malik, who listed Metro Brands last December.
