Tomato is the new petrol as prices surge to ₹120/kg

The sharp rise in tomato prices in major cities of south India is being attributed to widespread moderate to heavy rainfall since the first week of November

Tomatoes which traditionally cost between ₹20-30/kg in winters are now retailing at over Rs 100/kg as un-seasonal rains play havoc with the crop. The worst hit by the shortage is Chennai, where the vegetable is selling for ₹140 a kilo.

In Kerala, tomatoes are being sold for anywhere between ₹90 per kilo to ₹120 per kilo, while customers in the National Capital Region have to shell out anywhere between ₹ 90 to ₹ 108 for a kilo of tomatoes, according to news agency PTI.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera adding fuel to the inflation debate stated that "It appears as though there is Section 144 in the kitchen that you cannot keep more than four tomatoes or onions," Khera told reporters.

Meanwhile netizens were having a tomato feast with meme fest flooding social platforms.
