Coal & Power Crisis: PMO to step in as states raise red flag on low coal supply

The coal shortage is taking centre stage with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stepping in to take review of the falling coal positions at thermal power stations. Reports indicate that power & coal secretaries will make a presentation on the availability of power & coal to the PMO today. This comes a day after the union minister of coal as well as power met with Home Minister, Amit Shah to discuss the power concerns faced by states.

Currently nearly 25 power plants across the country are shut due to the non-availability of coal. As per data available 70 out of 135 thermal power plants in India are operating with less than 4 days of coal supply. Under 7 days is deemed critical as per power producers' regulation.

States such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh has resorted to load shedding while Discoms have warned customers in Delhi & Mumbai to ease consumption during peak hours else the power centres will also face potential blackouts.
