Canada extends super visa stay time, big boost for Indians

In a major move, which will benefit Indians the most, Canada has announced enhancements to its super visa program to make it easier for Canadians to reunite with their parents and grandparents in the country.

Under the changes announced by Immigration Minister, parents and grandparents coming to Canada can now stay here for up to five years per entry. The changes will kick in from July 4.

Previously, the super visa program allowed parents and grandparents with a super visa to remain in Canada for 2 years at a time.

The super visa programme, started in 2011, allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come and live with them in Canada for extended periods of time.

Indians in Canada

In 2020, 50,841 Indian citizens were invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada. They made up for 47 per cent of the total invites that were issued during the period.

In 2021, about one lakh Indians became permanent residents of Canada as the country admitted a record number of 4,05,000 new immigrants in its history.
