Xi and Putin Discuss Lifespan Expansion at Beijing Parade

Xi and Putin had a candid conversation on lifespan technologies at Beijing's parade, joined by Kim Jong Un. They highlighted advances in biotechnology impacting life expectancy, hinting at living up to 150 years.

Xi and Putin Discuss Lifespan Expansion at Beijing Parade

Beijing, Sep 4 (AP) In an unusual hot mic moment in Beijing, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the potential for scientific advancements to extend the human lifespan. The conversation was captured as Xi and Putin, accompanied by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, made their way on a red carpet towards a viewing platform for an upcoming Chinese military parade on Wednesday.

Xi initiated the exchange, but only fragments of his statement were audible. A Russian translator then conveyed his words: “Before, it was rare to live beyond 70, but now at 70, you're still considered young.” Putin, engaging with Xi, responded animatedly, prompting Kim to lean in, smiling occasionally as he listened. The Russian leader's specific comments were inaudible, but his intended meaning was relayed by a Chinese interpreter: “With biotechnology advancing, organ transplants will become more prevalent, potentially leading to rejuvenation and even immortality.”

Xi's slight smile suggested intrigue as he glanced briefly at Putin while listening. The live video feed then transitioned to an aerial view of the Tiananmen Gate viewing platform, but the audio remained active. A voice resembling Xi's speculated, “Some predict that within this century, it may be possible ...” though the audio momentarily faltered before picking up again with, “...may be able to live up to 150 years old.” It was unclear if this continuation was also spoken by Xi. A translator in Russian mentioned, “There are forecasts that in this world a person will live up to 100.” The parade media center provided this feed to international news outlets, including The Associated Press.

The parade, overseen by Xi, commemorated the 80th anniversary of World War II's end, showcasing China's military prowess with fighter jets, missiles, and other armaments, reflecting national advancements under Communist Party leadership.

Latterly, Putin confirmed at a news briefing that Xi had mentioned life expectancy during their walk to the parade. He alluded to the similar interest of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the subject. “Modern medical and health technologies, including surgical advances and organ replacements, offer humanity hope for more prolonged active lifestyles,” Putin noted. He added, “While the average life expectancy varies worldwide, it is evidently increasing.”
