WHO chief arrives in earthquake-hit Syria with medical aid

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Syria's northern city of Aleppo on Saturday.

Rescue efforts were continuing in Syria and neighbouring Turkey after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday collapsed hundreds of buildings and killed tens of thousands of people.

During his visit, Tedros will tour the city and meet patients in hospitals as well as displaced people in shelters, state media reported.

Tedros told Syrian TV upon arrival in Aleppo that the WHO team he travelled with brought 35 tons of medical equipment.

He added that another plane carrying 30 tons of medical equipment would arrive in the coming days.
