'Want to address delay in Green Card processes': US President Biden

The White House on Friday said that President Joe Biden wants to address unnecessary delays in the Green Card processing system. This is a move that will benefit a lot of Indians living on the H-1B visas currently.

The current immigration system imposes a seven per cent per country quota on allotment of the coveted Green Card or permanent legal residency.

Processing delays at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can waste the much-needed employment-based visas. According to recent court filings, USCIS is currently at risk of wasting almost 83,000 employment-based visas, which expired on October 1 this year.

In FY2020, a total of 1,22,000 family-preference visas went unused. This caused the number of employment-based visas available in FY21 to rise to 2,26,000.

This sizeable increase in employment-based visas represents a great opportunity to reduce the Green Card backlog.
