China's Wang Yi Visits India for Border Talks

Beijing, Aug 18 (PTI) - On Monday, China stated that the purpose of Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to India is to collaborate with New Delhi on implementing the key understandings reached between the leaders of both countries and the decisions taken during the last round of border discussions. Wang's visit to India spans two days, beginning Monday, to engage in the 24th round of Special Representatives (SRs) talks on the border issue with NSA Ajit Doval. Doval traveled to China in December for the 23rd round of talks with Wang, following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, during the October BRICS summit, where they decided to reignite various dialogue mechanisms. Through Wang's visit, China seeks to build on important common understandings reached by both leaders, ensure high-level exchanges, strengthen political trust, promote practical cooperation, appropriately handle differences, and foster the sustained and stable development of China-India relations, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. Mao described the SR-level talks on the India-China Boundary Question as a high-level channel for boundary negotiations between the two nations. During the 23rd round of talks in Beijing, the two parties reached a number of common understandings on delimitation, negotiations, border management mechanisms, and cross-border exchanges and cooperation. Since the start of the year, both sides have maintained communication through diplomatic channels and have actively implemented the outcomes of these talks. Concerning the upcoming talks, China expresses its readiness to continue an in-depth dialogue with India on these issues, based on existing common understanding with a positive and constructive attitude, aimed at maintaining sustained peace and tranquility in border areas, she added. In response to questions regarding progress in border negotiations and prospects for a settlement, Mao considered the SR-level talks to be a constructive and positive mechanism for both countries. The 23rd round resulted in significant consensus, and implementation is ongoing, she noted. China looks forward to further collaboration with India to realize the agreements made and maintain stability and tranquility in the border region. While in India, Wang will also engage in an extensive exchange of views with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on bilateral relations and other mutual interests, Mao mentioned. Wang's visit precedes the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, scheduled for August 31 - September 1, where Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend.
