"No bomb does what this is doing -- 200-300,000 people die every year, that we know of," Trump said at the signing of an executive order that placed the fentanyl in the same category as nuclear and chemical weapons.
But contrary to Trump's claim on fentanyl fatalities, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported an estimated total of about 80,000 overdose deaths in the country in 2024, with some 48,000 of those due to synthetic opioids.
The executive order said "illicit fentanyl is closer to a chemical weapon than a narcotic," and that its manufacture and distribution "threatens our national security and fuels lawlessness in our hemisphere and at our borders."
The fentanyl classification ties in with the Trump administration's war against alleged "narco-terrorists," which has included a military campaign targeting alleged drug-smuggling boats with strikes that have left nearly 90 people dead since early September.
But while Trump claims that each boat destroyed -- there have been more than 20 -- saves 25,000 American lives, the vessels are thought to be transporting cocaine rather than far-deadlier fentanyl, which is primarily smuggled into the United States from Mexico rather than by boat from Colombia or Venezuela.
Trump has accompanied the strikes with a massive military buildup in the Caribbean that includes the world's largest aircraft carrier and a slew of other warships, while a string of US military aircraft have flown along Venezuela's coast in recent weeks.
While Trump and his administration say the target of the military buildup is drug-trafficking, Venezuela's leftist leader Nicolas Maduro accuses Washington of using narcotics smuggling as a pretext for regime change in Caracas.
The United States has sought to link the two issues, accusing Maduro of leading the alleged "Cartel of the Suns," which it declared a "narco-terrorist" organization last month, and offering a $50 million reward for information leading to his capture.

Senior advocate Javed Mir is leading a team of lawyers representing the Luthra brothers, while advocate Vaibhav Suri has also reached Bangkok. Various legal options under Thai law are being explored to contest the case, sources said.
The Indian government, after cancelling the passports of the two brothers, has submitted a dossier to Thai authorities alleging their involvement in the deaths of 25 people. The allegations, sources said, take the case beyond the scope of culpable homicide. India has also formally requested Thai authorities to deport the brothers.
Thai authorities, meanwhile, are examining the legal complexities involved. The brothers are stated to have entered Thailand on valid travel documents, which were later revoked by Indian authorities, leaving them without valid papers. This has prompted Thai officials to examine the issue from multiple legal perspectives, including aspects related to basic human rights, sources said.
Indian government sources on Friday reportedly said that authorities in Thailand are initiating the process to deport the Luthra brothers. However, with legal and diplomatic considerations at play, the embassy sources indicated that the duo is unlikely to return to India in the immediate future.
The matter is now expected to be subject to detailed arguments before a local court, where all parties will be heard before any final decision is taken, they said.
Five managers and staff members have already been arrested by the Goa Police in connection with the fire.

Albanese said he would take the reforms to a National Cabinet meeting with state premiers on Monday afternoon.
"People can be radicalised over a period of time. Licences should not be in perpetuity," he said.
Mass shootings have been rare in Australia since a lone gunman killed 35 people in the tourist town of Port Arthur in 1996.
The so-called "Port Arthur massacre" led to sweeping reforms that were long seen as a gold standard worldwide.
These included a gun buyback scheme, a national firearms register and a crackdown on the ownership of semi-automatic weapons.
Albanese said it was time to consider whether the country's gun laws needed to be tightened up again.

A 10-year-old girl was among the 15 dead in Australia's worst mass shooting for almost 30 years, while 42 more were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds and other injuries.
Police are still unravelling what drove the shootings, although authorities have said the plot was clearly designed to sow terror among the nation's Jews.
"What we saw yesterday was an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday, before laying flowers at the Bondi Pavillion.
The gunmen targeted an annual celebration that drew more than 1,000 people to the beach to mark the Jewish festival.
They took aim from a raised boardwalk looking over the beach, which was packed with swimmers cooling off on a steamy summer evening.
Carrying long-barrelled guns, they peppered the beach with bullets for 10 minutes before police shot and killed the 50-year-old father.
The 24-year-old son was arrested and remained under guard in hospital with serious injuries.
Rabbi Mendel Kastel said his brother-in-law was among the dead.
"It's unbelievable that this has happened here in Australia, but we need to hold strong. This is not the Australia that we know. This is not the Australia that we want."
Wary of reprisals, police have so far dodged questions about the attackers' religion or ideological motivations.
"We want to get to the bottom of this. We want to understand the motives behind it," New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon said on Monday.
Hours after the shooting, police found a homemade bomb in a car parked close to the beach.
They said the "improvised explosive device" had likely been planted by the pair.
 - Panic and bravery -
A brave few dashed towards the beach as the shooting unfolded, wading through fleeing crowds to rescue children, treat the injured and confront the gunmen.
Footage showed a man -- identified by local media as fruit seller Ahmed al Ahmed -- grabbing one of the gunmen as he fired.
The 43-year-old wrestles the gun out of the attacker's hand, before pointing the weapon at the assailant who backs away.
A team of off-duty lifeguards sprinted across the sand to drag children to safety.
"The team ran out under fire to try and clear children from the playground while the gunmen were firing," said Steven Pearce from Surf Life Saving New South Wales.
"They were able to get the children inside," he told AFP.
"The other lifesavers went out and started trying to do CPR on the shot victims, and tried to drag as many inside as they could."
Bleeding victims were carried across the beach atop surfboards turned into makeshift stretchers.
Frenchman Alban Baton, 23, hid for several hours in the cool room of a Bondi Beach grocery store.
"Minute after minute, we were starting to realise what was happening," he told AFP.
A grassy hill overlooking Bondi Beach was on Monday strewn with discarded items from people fleeing the killing, including a camping table and blankets.
People gathered flip flops, sneakers, and thermos flasks and lined them up in the sand for collection.
Australia mourned the dead by lowering flags to half-mast.

A number of artefacts from India dating back to the British colonial era are among over 600 &ldquo;high value&rdquo; items stolen in a burglary at a museum in Bristol, south-west England, the police said on Thursday.
The Avon and Somerset Police said the items were stolen from Bristol Museum's British Empire and Commonwealth collection on September 25 and released CCTV footage of four white male suspects in an appeal for information.
The historic collection documents the links between Britain and countries in the British Empire from the late 19th century onwards. &ldquo;Detectives investigating a high value burglary of museum artefacts are appealing for the public&rsquo;s help to identify these people,&rdquo; the police force said in a statement.
&ldquo;The building housed items from the Bristol Museum&rsquo;s British Empire and Commonwealth collection. More than 600 artefacts of various descriptions were taken by the offenders,&rdquo; the police said.
Among the items stolen in the robbery include an ivory Buddha and a waist belt buckle belonging to an East India Company officer.
&ldquo;The theft of many items which carry a significant cultural value is a significant loss for the city,&rdquo; said Detective Constable Dan Burgan of the Avon and Somerset Police.
&ldquo;These items, many of which were donations, form part of a collection that provides insight into a multi-layered part of British history, and we are hoping that members of the public can help us to bring those responsible to justice.

The social media platform X, which around 4.5 million people in Pakistan use, was blocked in February 2024, around 10 days after the general elections.
Speaking on Dawn News programme, Barrister Malik, responding to a question about a possible ban on incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan&rsquo;s X account, said &ldquo;investigations are ongoing.&rdquo; He added that while the government has contacted X, the platform has shown the least cooperation compared to other social media networks.
Criticising X, the minister said the platform should not operate with double standards. &ldquo;Posts related to Palestine are removed, and accounts blocked, within 24 hours. Here, we are talking about a matter of terrorism,&rdquo; he said.
He further noted that the government has issued reminders to social media platforms and warned that those that fail to cooperate or coordinate could face a ban, similar to actions taken by Brazil. &ldquo;Brazil&rsquo;s courts had issued orders, which were then accepted, and a fine of USD 5.2 million was paid. All content taken out of context was removed,&rdquo; Barrister Malik said.
X had 22 million users in Brazil before it was blocked on August 30 by Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes for failing to comply with a series of court orders aimed at combatting disinformation.
Barrister Malik said that today the government again issued a reminder, emphasising that it had already warned that these platforms are being used for terrorism, misinformation, and disinformation. &ldquo;We have asked them to open offices here in Pakistan, but there has been no response. Some social media platforms are cooperating well, but X is cooperating the least,&rdquo; he added.
Earlier, on October 4, the minister said that investigations regarding Imran&rsquo;s X account were ongoing and that contact with the platform was underway. He had said that any measures regarding a potential block of Imran&rsquo;s account would be disclosed once further evidence comes to light.
According to an October post on his official X account, Imran was also quizzed in prison by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials about his &ldquo;anti-state&rdquo; tweets, critical remarks on foreign policy and other topics.

The proposed sale is also aimed at modernising Pakistan&rsquo;s F-16 fleet and addressing operational safety concerns.
The letter notes that it will &ldquo;maintain Pakistan&rsquo;s capability to meet current and future threats by updating and refurbishing its Block&ndash;52 and Mid Life Upgrade F&ndash;16 fleet,&rdquo; the report said.

It also addresses regional concerns, asserting that &ldquo;the proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.&rdquo;
The total estimated value of the sale is USD 686 million, with major defence equipment valued at USD 37 million and other items at USD 649 million.
The letter concludes that the sale &ldquo;will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States&rdquo; while ensuring that Pakistan can continue to operate its F-16 fleet safely and effectively.

Gusev did not give the cause of the fire, but some media have published a video showing a military helicopter in the area before an explosion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the substantive outcomes of his visit to Jordan, noting a "meaningful expansion" of cooperation between the two countries across sectors, including clean energy, water management, culture and digital innovation.
Modi arrived in Jordan's capital Amman on Monday on a two-day visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II. Jordan is the first leg of the Prime Minister's four-day, three-nation tour, which will also take him to Ethiopia and Oman.
India and Jordan on Monday inked MoUs in the fields of culture, renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure and twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora, aimed at giving a major boost to bilateral ties and friendship.
In a series of social media posts on Tuesday, Modi said these outcomes mark a "meaningful expansion" of the India-Jordan partnership.
Cooperation between India and Jordan in new and renewable energy "reflects a shared commitment to clean growth, energy security and climate responsibility", he said.
The Prime Minister said collaboration in water resources management and development would enable the two countries to share best practices in conservation, efficiency and technology, aimed at ensuring long-term water security.
Highlighting cultural cooperation, he said a Twinning Agreement between Petra and Ellora would "open new avenues for heritage conservation, tourism and academic exchanges".
Modi also said the renewal of the Cultural Exchange Programme for 2025&ndash;2029 would further deepen people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Sharing India's digital innovations with Jordan will support the kingdom's digital transformation and promote inclusive governance, he said.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South) in the Ministry of External Affairs, said during his meeting with PM Modi, King Abdullah II conveyed strong support for India's fight against terrorism and condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The Prime Minister commended the leading efforts by the King on "deradicalisation", she said.
Modi's visit to Jordan marks 75 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Arab nation.
This was the prime minister's full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan. He had transited through Jordan in February 2018, while on his way to Palestine.
India and Jordan share strong economic ties, with New Delhi being the third-largest trading partner of Amman. The bilateral trade between the two countries is valued at USD 2.8 billion.
Jordan is also a leading supplier of fertilisers to India, particularly phosphates and potash.
The Arab country is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people employed across sectors such as textiles, construction, and manufacturing.
From Jordan, Modi will head to Ethiopia on the second leg of his three-nation tour.

US President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC, alleging defamation and election interference over an edited documentary on his January 6, 2021 speech.

US President Donald Trump on Monday filed a lawsuit seeking at least $10 billion from the BBC over a documentary that edited his 2021 speech to supporters ahead of the US Capitol riot.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, seeks "damages in an amount not less than $5,000,000,000" for each of two counts against the British broadcaster, for alleged defamation and violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
Trump, 79, had said earlier on Monday that the lawsuit was imminent, claiming the BBC had "put words in my mouth," even positing that "they used AI or something."
The documentary at issue aired last year before the 2024 election, on the BBC's "Panorama" flagship current affairs program.
The video spliced together two separate sections of Trump's speech on January 6, 2021 in a way that made it appear he explicitly urged supporters to attack the Capitol, where lawmakers were certifying Joe Biden's 2020 election win.
"The formerly respected and now disgraced BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech in a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election," a spokesperson for Trump's legal team said in a statement to AFP.
"The BBC has a long pattern of deceiving its audience in coverage of President Trump, all in service of its own leftist political agenda," the statement added.
The British Broadcasting Corporation, whose audience extends well beyond the United Kingdom, faced a period of turmoil last month after a media report brought renewed attention to the edited clip.
The scandal led the BBC director-general and the organization's top news executive to resign.
Trump's lawsuit accuses the edited speech in the documentary of being "fabricated and aired by the Defendants one week before the 2024 Presidential Election in a brazen attempt to interfere in and influence the Election's outcome to President Trump's detriment."
The BBC has denied Trump's claims of legal defamation, though BBC chairman Samir Shah has sent Trump a letter of apology.
Shah also told a UK parliamentary committee last month that the broadcaster should have acted sooner to acknowledge its mistake after the error was disclosed in a memo, which was leaked to The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
The BBC lawsuit is the latest in a string of legal action Trump has taken against media companies in recent years, several of which have led to multi-million-dollar settlements.

They have boarded a flight for Delhi and will be handed over to Indian authorities on arrival, sources said. The duo will be produced before a Delhi court for further legal proceedings, they said. A case of culpable homicide and negligence has been registered against them in connection with the fire.
Videos circulating online showed Gaurav, 44, and Saurav, 40, being escorted by Thai police at Bangkok airport ahead of their departure for India.
The deportation comes days after the two were detained in Phuket on December 11 following the intervention of the Indian mission, which was in close touch with the Thai government in the case.
The Luthra brothers, co-owners of &lsquo;Birch by Romeo Lane&rsquo; nightclub in Arpora in North Goa, had left for Thailand shortly after the December 6 fire. They were reportedly attending a wedding in Delhi at the time of the incident. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice was issued against the duo.
The blaze had sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions over alleged safety violations and lapses by the nightclub management. The Indian government, after cancelling the passports of the two brothers, had submitted a dossier to Thai authorities alleging their involvement in the deaths of 25 people and formally sought their deportation. India and Thailand signed an Extradition Treaty in 2013, which came into force in June 2015.
The Goa Police have so far arrested five managers and staff members of the nightclub in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Monday converted a civil suit against the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub into a Public Interest Litigation, observing that &ldquo;someone has to be held accountable&rdquo; for the tragedy.

A father and son were driven by "Islamic State ideology" when they fired on Bondi Beach in one of Australia's deadliest mass shootings, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday.
Sajid Akram and his son Naveed opened fire on Jewish crowds thronging the famous beach for Hanukkah on Sunday evening, killing 15 people and wounding dozens more.
Authorities said the attack was designed to sow panic among the nation's Jews, but have so far given little detail about the gunmen's deeper motivations.
Albanese gave one of the first hints that the pair had been radicalised by an "ideology of hate".
"It would appear that this was motivated by Islamic State ideology," Albanese told national broadcaster ABC.
"With the rise of ISIS more than a decade ago now, the world has been grappling with extremism and this hateful ideology," he said in a separate interview.
Police found a car registered to Naveed Akram parked near the beach in the aftermath of the shooting.
They found improvised bombs and "two homemade ISIS flags", New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said on Tuesday, using another name for the Islamic State group.
Authorities are facing mounting questions over whether they could have acted earlier to foil the attack.
Albanese said Naveed Akram, reportedly an unemployed bricklayer, had come to the attention of Australia's intelligence agency in 2019 but was not considered an imminent threat at the time.
"They interviewed him, they interviewed his family members, they interviewed people around him," Albanese said.
"He was not seen at that time to be a person of interest."
Police are still piecing together the duo's movements before the shooting.
A key question is whether they met with Islamist extremists on a trip to the Philippines last month, Australian media reported.
"The reasons why they went to the Philippines, and the purpose of that, and where they went, is under investigation at the moment," Lanyon told reporters on Tuesday.
Naveed reportedly told his mother on the day of the attack that he was heading out of the city on a fishing trip.
Instead, authorities believe that he was holed up in a rental apartment with his father plotting the assault.
Carrying long-barrelled guns, they peppered the beach and a nearby park with bullets for 10 minutes before police shot and killed 50-year-old Sajid.
Naveed, 24, remains in a coma in hospital under police guard.
 - Stricter gun control? -
A 10-year-old girl, a Holocaust survivor and a local rabbi were among those killed, while 42 others were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds and other injuries.
Australia's leaders agreed on Monday to toughen laws that allowed father Sajid to own six guns.
Mass shootings have been rare in Australia since a lone gunman killed 35 people in the tourist town of Port Arthur in 1996.
The Port Arthur Massacre sparked a world-leading crackdown that included a gun buyback scheme and limits on semi-automatic weapons.
But many Australians are now questioning whether those laws are equipped to deal with online sales and a steady rise in privately owned guns.
"This horrific situation now, it does make me personally feel that they need to be stricter," David Sovyer, 43, told AFP.
Retiree Allan McRae, 75, said "not a lot of people need a gun".
"It would've reduced the possibility of it happening if more people had reduced access to a gun," he told AFP.
 - Failed to act -
The attack has also revived allegations that Australia is dragging its feet in the fight against antisemitism.
"The last four years, I was very clear. And I was very clear about the dangers of the rise in antisemitism," Israel's ambassador to Australia, Amir Maimon, said while visiting a memorial to the victims on Tuesday.
Australian Jewish Association head Robert Gregory told AFP the government had "failed to take adequate actions to protect the Jewish community".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Australia's decision to recognise Palestinian statehood this year had poured "oil on the fire of antisemitism".
Desperate to help, Australians have lined up in their thousands to donate blood to the wounded.
Red Cross Australia said more than 7,000 people had given blood on Monday, smashing the previous national record.
A makeshift flower memorial next to Bondi Beach swelled in size on Monday evening as mourners gathered to pay tribute to the victims and mark the second day of Hanukkah.
Hundreds of mourners, including members of the Jewish community, sang songs, clapped and held each other.
Leading a ceremony to light a menorah, a rabbi told the crowd: "The only strength we have is if we bring light into the world."
