Marc Fogel, held in Russia for drug smuggling, is back in the US with Trump's negotiation efforts highlighting US-Russia diplomatic moves.

US teacher Marc Fogel released from Russian custody

In a surprising development, American educator Marc Fogel has returned to the United States after being released from a Russian penal colony. Fogel, who was convicted of drug smuggling in 2021 for carrying medically prescribed marijuana, described his release as an overwhelming relief.

Fogel, from Pennsylvania, spent much of his teaching career at international schools, including institutions in Colombia, Malaysia, Oman, Mexico, and Venezuela. He was teaching at the Anglo-American School in Moscow since 2012, a role that once conferred diplomatic immunity until Russia rescinded this status for teachers in 2020. Arrested in August 2021 at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, he was found with a small amount of cannabis, prescribed for chronic back pain. Despite the U.S. State Department labeling his detention as “unjust”, Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony.

The specifics of his release remain undisclosed, but it involved negotiations facilitated by former President Donald Trump and his envoy. Trump, who expressed gratitude towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, hailed the resolution as fair and hinted at potential diplomatic benefits towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Fogel’s return has been celebrated by his family, legal representatives, and officials from Pennsylvania, his home state. His family, critical of previous administration efforts, expressed relief and gratitude. Legal advisors described the release as historic, crediting Trump’s decisive leadership.

Meanwhile, concerns persist for other Americans detained in Russia. Efforts purportedly continue to secure the release of approximately ten U.S. citizens still held, highlighting ongoing diplomatic challenges.

Fogel’s release coincides with Trump’s broader diplomatic endeavors to strengthen U.S.-Russia relations and address the Ukraine conflict. While the details of any potential agreements with Russia remain opaque, the move is perceived as a goodwill gesture amidst strained bilateral relations.
