Ukraine: Russian forces in Kyiv region; latest visuals of damage; residents describe attack

Russia's attack on Ukraine assumed sinister proportions with the military entering north of capital Kyiv, as per news reports quoting Ukrainian officials.

Visuals emerged of smoke rising from the Ukrainian defence ministry office in Kyiv. A fire was seen blazing, but it was unclear whether the fire was inside the building or outside it.

Explosions were also captured on camera in Myrhorod in Poltova region. The explosions reportedly occurred near an airfield and a bomb depot.

Photographs of the carnage also emerged from Mariupol and Kharkiv. Damaged military equipment, vehicles, and radar were seen at Ukrainian military facilities. Visuals of destruction also emerged from Kyiv. Houses were destroyed, and rubble covered public places.

Residents of Kharkiv in Ukraine recounted their horror after the Russian offensive began. Mikhail Scherbakov said, "The shelling started at 5 in the morning. I heard noise and woke up. I realized it sounded like artillery. I jumped from the couch, ran to wake up my mother and this came (referring to the missile). I heard explosion behind my back, something exploded nearby and broke windows, then small rocks hit me making me think it was the broken glass."
