Ukraine President says hundreds of Russians captured; 'bulk of invasion force 30 km from Kyiv'

As fighting raged in and around Kyiv, the Ukrainian President released a fresh video of himself speaking from the streets of the national capital.

In a subsequent press conference, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said hundreds of Russians had been captured, and also told invading forces to rebel against Vladimir Putin and return. He said, "Thousands of victims, hundreds of captured who can't understand why they have been sent into Ukraine to kill and be killed. The sooner you say to your government that this war should be immediately stopped, the more of your people will stay alive."

In his selfie video, Zelenskyy said, "Much fake information has appeared on the internet, as if I had called to lay down arms and if there had been an evacuation. Here's the situation. I'm here. We won't lay down arms. We will defend our country, because our arms are our truth. Our truth is that it's our land, our country, our children and we will defend all of this. That's it. That's all I wanted to say. Glory to Ukraine."

The Ukrainian government said that Russian forces are continuing their advance towards Kyiv with the bulk of Moscow's forces only 30 km from the city centre. Ukraine also claimed that Russia has yet to gain control over its airspace, thus weakening the efficacy of the Russian Air Force.

Earlier, visuals emerged of a police car up in flames on a Kyiv street as Ukrainian soldiers tried to hold off incoming Russian troops.

Ukrainian forces also claimed to have destroyed a Russian military convoy near the capital. Ukrainian soldiers were seen sifting through the rubble as gutted vehicles smoked on the road.
