UK Tightens English Language Requirements and Visa Regulations

The UK tightens English language and visa requirements, affecting skilled workers and students from January 2026. The focus is on better integration and reducing immigration levels.

UK Tightens English Language Requirements and Visa Regulations

London, Oct 14 (PTI) The United Kingdom announced stricter English language requirements for visa applicants, including those from India, as part of efforts to manage rising immigration levels. This measure, introduced in Parliament, mandates a new "Secure English Language Test" for all skilled workers from January 8, 2026. Conducted by a Home Office-approved provider, the test results will be essential for visa applications. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to A-Level or Class 12, identified as level B2, to ensure better integration into UK life.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of migrants learning English to contribute effectively to the community. "This country has always welcomed those who come here and contribute. However, it is unacceptable for migrants to come here without learning our language, unable to contribute to our national life," she stated. She reinforced the message by saying, "If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part."

The announcement, detailed in a written ministerial statement (WMS) in the House of Commons, aligns with the British government's ‘Immigration White Paper’ from May, aiming to tighten the visa regime. Among the proposed changes is a reduction in the time allocated for international students to secure a graduate-level job after completing their studies. The Graduate Route visa duration will be shortened from the current two years to 18 months starting January 1, 2027, while PhD-level graduates will still enjoy three years of permission, as previously announced.

Apart from this, financial requirements for student visas will rise starting the 2025-2026 academic year. This change means international students must prove they have enough funds to support themselves. Maintenance funds are increasing from 1,483 pounds to 1,529 pounds per month in London and from 1,136 pounds to 1,171 pounds elsewhere in the UK.

The Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) will also see a 32 percent increase. This fee, paid by UK employers who sponsor skilled foreign workers, aims to boost investment in British workers and reduce the need for overseas recruitment. Consequently, small or charitable organizations will pay 480 pounds per person, per year, up from 364 pounds, and medium to large organizations will pay 1,320 pounds, up from 1,000 pounds.

Additional changes include expanding the number of universities whose graduates can access the High Potential Individual (HPI) route, with a cap now set at 8,000 places each year. By doubling the current intake from 2,000 to 4,000, graduates from top global universities will have increased opportunities to pursue careers in the UK.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to attract highly skilled professionals, including top researchers, designers, and creatives in film and TV, with further adjustments planned for the Global Talent route next year. Furthermore, the world's most talented entrepreneurs studying in the UK will find it easier to transition to the Innovator Founder route, enabling them to establish new business ventures after completing their studies.

Lastly, the UK will now require all nationals of Botswana to obtain a visa for any visit, including short stays. This change responds to a significant number of Botswanan nationals misusing the UK’s immigration system by arriving as visitors and subsequently claiming asylum.
