UK elections: 11 cabinet ministers fail to get re-elected

The Conservative Party has suffered a humbling defeat in the 2024 UK general elections, with many cabinet ministers and senior MPs losing out on their seats.

A record-breaking nine members from PM Rishi Sunak's cabinet did not get re-elected to the House of Commons. Here is a list of all the Tory leaders who failed to retain their seats:

  • Defence Secretary Grant Shapps
  • Chief Whip Simon Hart
  • Education Secretary Gillian Keegan
  • Justice Secretary Alex Chalk
  • Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt
  • Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer
  • Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer
  • Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan
  • Wales Secretary- David Davies
  • Attorney General Victoria Prentis
  • Transport Secretary Mark Harper

While Rishi Sunak was able to defend his Richmond seat, his predecessor Liz Truss fell to the political waves created by the Labour Party.

The outcome of the poll so far predicts a disastrous night for the Conservative Party, forecasting its lowest-ever total number of seats and bringing an end to Sunak’s premiership.

Shapps lost to Labour in Welwyn Hatfield while Chalk was defeated in Cheltenham by Liberal Democrat candidate Max Wilkinson, The Independent newspaper reported.

Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt, 51, has narrowly lost in her now former Portsmouth North constituency.

Traditionally a bellwether seat, Labour's Amanda Martin has won with 14,495 votes, to Mordaunt's 13,715 - an 18% swing, the BBC reported.

Her defeat will be a blow to moderate Conservatives who are hoping to wrest control of the party away from its populist wing, according to media reports.
